Soviet Union Invaded Finland
Red Army crosses the Soviet-Finnish border with 465,000 men and 1,000 aircraft. The Soviet soldiers wore summer uniforms, despite the Scandinavian winter. The Helsinki raid had produced many casualties. President Roosevelt quickly extended $10 million in credit to Finland, while also noting that the Finns were the only people to pay back their World War I debt to the United States. By that time Soviets already sent massive reinforcements and overtook them. -
Barbosa Begins
On June 22 Adolf Hitler sent out his massive armies and invaded the Soviet Union. Barbosa was a major turning point to the second world war and German Armies but more than they could chew when they were found to deep in Soviet territory. By October they netted 600,000 prisoners. -
Battle of Moscow
The Germans threatened Moscow, then they bombed them. After attacks from the sides Germans were feeling fatigue. Russia suffered 600,000 casualties. Germans not so many but 250,000 casualties. -
United States Declares War on Japan
Japan attacked Pearl Harbor which soon caused Roosevelt to enter the war. President Roosevelt requested and received a declaration of war against Japan and signed it at 4:10 pm! On both coasts civilian defense groups were mobilized. These defense groups were important after being sucker punched by Japan. -

Bob Barker the legendary game show host was playing college basketball when WWII broke out. He proudly served as a fighter pilot in the United States Navy. -
1942 Basketball Champs
The Cowboys won the Mountain State Conference and were the first basketball team from the Rocky Mountains to win a NCAA Basketball Championship. St. Johns one the National Invitation Tournament and then played The Wyoming Cowboys in a Red Cross game, but lost in overtime 52-47 in Madison Square Garden. -
1943 NHL Stanley Cup
Detroit Red Wings all season dominated! They were the best team all year and followed it up with a Stanley Cup win. There record was 26-18-6 and then beat the Boston Bruins in overtime for the Stanley Cup. -
1943 Heisman Winner
Entering Notre Dame at 6'1 170 pounds was Angelo Bertelli! During his senior year in 1943, the Marine Corps activated Bertelli after six games of Notre Dame's 10 game season. In the six games Bertelli started in, he threw 36 passes, completing 25 with 10 touchdowns. After U.S entered WWII Bertelli joined the Marines. -
1944 Boxing
Joseph Lois Barrow was reigned the heavy weight boxing champion! He had the 100 greatest punches of all time. He had 25 title defenses, a world record. Joe Louis impact was felt well outside the ring. He was the first African American to achieve the status of hero in the United States. -
1945 Negro Leagues
The Negro Leagues were a United States professional baseball league for African Americans and to lesser extent Latin Americans. In 1945 the Cleveland Buckeyes swept the Washington Homestead Greys! Cleveland Buckeyes the champions of 1945 Negro League beat the Grey 4 games to 0 -
