    The British gain control of a big part of Eastern Canada under the Treaty of Utrecht.
  • Canada loses control over their French speaking lands.

    The French part of Canada loses the French and Indian War to the British. Great Britain there for gains control of all the French speaking lands in Canada.
  • The province of Manitoba joins Canada.

  • British Columbia becomes the sixth province of Canada.

    The first Sikhs in Canada

    Most of the Sikhs came to Canada as a part of the Hong Kong military contingent.
  • South Asian Immigration Banned

  • Policies were changed to allow for full South Asian immigration to Canada.

  • Immigration and Labour Demand

    Because of a great demand for labour, Canada re-opened its doors to European immigration after the Second World War. the door opened first to immigrants Canada traditionally preferred, the United-Kingdom and Western Europe, but eventually to all of Europe. Immigration from the Eastern Europe stopped.
  • Hungarian Uprising

    Thousands of Hungarian students demanded free speech and free elections in Hungary. This uprising ended when Soviets military tanks rolled into the Hungarian capital, Budapest. Many Hungarian refugees fled to Canada.

    The now-known Canadian flag with the red maple leaf was adopted, replacing the one that had a link to the British flag.
