  • Militia Act

    Passed by Congress to include black men in the war. Initially used as infrastructure and later put on the front line.
  • Battle of Antietam

    Confederate army led by Robert E. Lee invaded Maryland. It was the first fight on Union territory. While the Union was on the way there, they found all of Lee's battle plans. McClellan moved slowly, however, and both men lost men in the fight. Ultimately, McClellan let him leave and didn't follow him which made Lincoln mad.
  • Emmancipation Proclamation

    Followed the win at Antietam. It freed slaves in the South.
  • Emmancipation Proclamation Goes into Effect

    It officially went into effect on January 1st.
  • Enrollement Act

    The first draft in American history.
  • Vicksburg

    Ulysses S. Grant led the Union army in the overtake of a US military fort on the Mississippi River. They win against the Confederates and in turn, split the Confederate territory in half.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    Robert E. Lee marches the Confederate army from Virginia, through Maryland, and into Pennslyvania using the Shenandoah Valley. Lee used the valley to hide his movements from George Meade. They ended up meeting in Gettysburg where the Union army defeated the Confederate army. From this point on, the Confederate army was on the defense.

    Irish Draft Riot's

    The riots turned New York City into a war zone. Was a response to the Enrollment Act. Irish felt that the draft screwed them in a war that would only leave them worse off if their side won.
