The Meaning of 'Meaning'
The concept of Putnam's meaning was proposed in a paper "Meaning of 'Meaning'", forging forward with the claim that words get their meaning not from images and descriptions from ones mind. But that from our reality of our world and social structure. Leading us to have diversity with different languages, having different world and social structure. He used the "Twin Earth Thought Experiment" to show that meanings are not in our minds.(Team2020) -
Semantic Externalism
Externalism: what is playing in a person’s mind not just determined by what is in the body but how our the world around us impacts both our natural and social. An individuals grasp of ideas or views does not mean they will not have an extensive use of terms. Meaning for the most part is in reference to an object or reality, social in character and individual means with ones beliefs, culture and environment. Internal Realism
Putnam called for "metaphysical realism" be modified to "internal realism. Pointing out that metaphysical realism separates our thoughts and perception of the world around us.
