  • Hard times in England and where to put the convicts

    In the 1770's it was a very hard time for people in England. They stole food to survive and that caused crime and that was the time when the needed somewhere to store convicts after the overcrowded prison hulks and America not wanting any more prisoners sent over. So that's when they decided to send the convicts over to Australia after Cook had discovered it.
  • The aboriginals were scared

    The aboriginals were scared
    When the First Fleet arrived the aboriginals saw them and were scared and frightened and had no idea what was going on they wan't them gone so they tried to frighten them with spears. The aboriginals didn't know it set but their lives had changed forever on that day.
  • Captain Cook claimed Australia was owned by England

    Captain Cook raised a flag claiming Australia now was owned by England.
  • The first Fleet left England

    The first Fleet left England
    On the 13th of May 1787 the First Fleet left England on their long journey to Australia.
  • Captain Arthur Phillip sailed into Botany Bay

    Captain Arthur Phillip sailed into Botany Bay
    On this day Captain Arthur Phillip along with many other marines and convicts sailed into Botany Bay. Within the next 2 days after the rest of the 11 ships filled with convicts arrived.
  • Off to Port Jackson

    Off to Port Jackson
    On the 26th of January now known as (Australia Day) 1788 Captain Arthur Phillip and his crew decided Botany Bay wasn't good enough due to bad soil for growing crops. They then sailed to Port Jackson not far away, where they settled in.
  • Smallpox arrived

    Only 15 months after the British arrived aboriginals were seen dying in large amounts due to smallpox. The British had carried smallpox over from England without knowing. The aboriginals thought they brought with them on purpose just to get rid of them. The convicts didn't catch because they had vaccinations while they were in England.
  • Bennelong was captured

    Bennelong was captured
    On the 24th November 1789 Bennelong along with another aboriginal were captured by British. Captain Arthur Phillip wanted aboriginals to know what they were like and teach them how to live like himself. Bennelong and Arthur Phillip became good friends and even took him over to England.

    On the 7th of September 1790 Captain Arthur Phillip was speared by Aborigines because he invaded their land and kidnapped an aboriginal.
  • First free settlers

    First free settlers
    In 1793 the Bellona transport ship arrived with only women convicts and Australia's first free settlers. The free settlers ad quite a harsh life having only basic shelter and having strange people (aboriginals) as the thought, living amongst them.
  • The end of sending convicts to Australia

    On the 1st of October 1850 the British decided to stop sending convicts to New South Wales and a short time after they stopped sending convicts to Tasmania either.
