Greeks on Deaf Education
The Ancient Greeks believed the hearing impaired/ deaf were incapable of education. -

Helen Keller
Helen Keller was a woman who overcame the struggle for being both blind and deaf. The illness she was stricken with, brain fever, caused her to go blind and deaf. With this she had to learn how to communicate in a new way. -

This goes along with the invention of the telephone, continuing the movement. -
Teletypewriter
The teletypewriter (TTY) was a way for the hearing and deaf to communicate. With this, deaf people would be able to make the necessary phone calls with doctors, friends, family, etc. -

In the 1974 Census, it shows there were 1.8 million deaf people in America. -
Hearing Loss Association of America
This organization was founded in 1979 by Howard E. “Rocky” Stone. They help people know their rights and help people who are deaf or hard of hearing through their tough battles. They provide them with knowledge and tools that can help the hard of hearing people be successful in the future. -
Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
The Americans with the Disabilities Act passed in the 1990s and it is a system of telecommunications. It provides services for people who are deaf or hard of hearing and makes the telephone network accessible to them. -
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) was passed. The Department of Education establishes a "Policy of Inclusion" giving all disabled students the right to attend school. Schools for the Deaf are known as the “most restrictive environment.” -
Closed Captions
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) made new captioning rules for the television industry. Some of the new rules were that the captions would be real-time. All of the television programs would have captions. -
Switched at Birth
Switched at Birth was a television show that had actors who were deaf such as award winning actor, Marlee Matlin. Also Sean Berdy who played her son, was also deaf. They used ASL and provided captions. -
Nyle DiMarco
Nyle DiMarco is a successful celebrity and him being deaf doesn't affect him in anyway. He was the winner of "Dancing with the Stars" in 2016. It did not matter if he was deaf, he was still able to dance his heart out. He was also on "America's Next Top Model" and was a special guest on the ABC's family TV series, "Switched at Birth."
