French Revolutionary government granted citizenship to wealthier Affranchis. European population disregarded the law and in 2 months fighting broke out. In August thousands of slaves rebelled. -

LegerFelicite Sonthonax was sent from France to Haiti to maintain order and offered freedom to slaves who joined his army. -

Toussaint Louverture gained control of several areas and earned the support of French agents. Pursued his own dreams. -

Toussaint Louverture named himself "governor-general for life". -

Touissant Louverture dies. -

The entire island was declared independent under the name Haiti. -

Dessalines assumed the title of Emperor Jacques I. -

The Island of Haiti divided into 2 parts, the Kingdom and the Republic. -

The French withdrew fully from the island of Haiti. -
1862
The U.S. recognized Haiti as a country.
