    Australia has its hottest New Years day record. The theremometre reached 45 degrees celsius and caused 45 bushfires across the east coast and power outrages. The heat caused 35 people to be treated from heat exhaustion and 100 people had to be rescued by life guards across the australian beaches.

    An earthquake occured in Aegean Sea close to the island of Kythira in Greece. The earthquake measured at 6.9. The earthquake was strongly felt through out Greece as well as in Southern Italy, Egypt, Cyprus, Turkey, Lebanon, Israel, Syria, and Jordan.

    The 2006 winter olympics were held in Turin, Italy. It started on February 10th and ended on February 26th. The three top countries were Germany, United States, and Canada. Germany ended up with 29 medals, United States with 25, and Canada with 24 which included 7 gold, 10 silvers, and 7 bronze.

    60 tornadoes hit the central and southern parts of the United States. Most of the 29 deaths were recorded in Tennessee. $1.5 billion in damage was reported and $630 million of that was in Tennessee. It was the third major outbreak of 2006.

    Four Canadian men are killed in Afghanistan by a roadside bomb. It was planted by Taliban militants. This was known to be the worst single day combat loss for the Canadian army since the Korean War.

    The new World Trade Center construction begins. The site is being rebuilt with five new skyscrapers and a memorial to the casualties of the attack on September 11 2001. One of the buildings will be 100 stories. It became the tallest building as of 2012 and is expected to be finished by 2013.

    The Java earthquake occured in the Indian Ocean and measured at a magnitude of 6.2. It was followed by two aftershcoks which were measured at 4.8 and 4.6. The quake left 5 782 people dead, 36 299 injured, and over 200 000 homeless.

    On May 31st, 100 millimetres of rain caused landslides in and around a small town in Quebec called La Tuque. The landslides damaged roads and flooded houses. The state emergency evacuted almost everyone.

    400 Officers in Toronto
    400 police officers raid homes in Toronto, Ontario and arrest 15 men. All of them were born in Canada and were reportedly planning to attack the Parliament in Ottawa, the Bank of Toronto, and kidnap deputees and Stephen Harper.

    The 2006 FIFA World Cup was held on June 6th till June 9th to July 9th in Germany. The World Cup included 31 teams. Italy won the tournament claiming their forth world cup. They defeated France 5-3. Finally the finals attracted 751 million viewers.

    The 2006 Lebanon War also called the 2006 Isreal-Hezbollah War started on June 12th and lasted for 34 days. It started when Hezbollah launched 2 missiles on the tanks patrolling the border. The conflict killed 1191 Lebanese people and 165 Isrealis.

    Spiritwood Incident
    Spiritwood is a town located in Saskatchewan approximately 92 miles Northwest of Saskatoon. The town has about 1000 people. On July 7th, two officers, Robin Cameron and Marc Bourdages, responded to a complaint at a home. When the cops got their, the two men teid leaving ina pickup truck. The chase lasted for 27 kilometres and gun fire exchanged but the two men ended up killing the two cops. They were later captured after being hunted for twelve days.

    On July 9th 2006, Sibir Airlines Airbus A310 passenger jet goes off the runway while trying to land due to wet conditions. The plane had 200 passengers on it and killed 122 people and leaving the other 78 people injured.

    Thunder in Canada
    After record breaking heat in Canada, a series of thunderstorms hit Ontario. The storms caused the worst damage to the province's power grid since 1998. The storm killed 22 people and the power in some areas was wiped out for a week.

    2 weeks after the record breaking heat in Ontario and Quebec, strong storms hit in central and eastern Ontario. Eight tornadoes were reported including two F2's. 200 000 residents lost power and more then 20 000 needed weeks to restore their power.

    Two people are killed and 19 injured in the Dawson college in Montreal. Kimveer Gill walked into the school and started shooting people and in the end ended his own life.

    A highway overpass on Autoroute 19 in Laval collapses, killing five people and injuring six others.

    Saddam Hussein
    Saddam Hussein who is the former president of Iraq is sentenced to death with his codefendants. Saddam Hussein killed 148 Shi'as in 1982.
