Harriet Tubman was born in 1822 as a slave. Her original name was Arminta Ross. -
Teenage years
As a teenager, Harriet was very caring of the slaves around her. She was hit in the head with a metal object and went into a coma. -
Escaping to the north
Tubman escaped to Philadelphia in the fall of 1849, but soon returned to Maryland to rescue her family. One at a time, she returned slaves to freedom. -
Fugitive Slave Act of 1850
When the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 was passed to recapture slaves in the North, Tubman began to escort slaves to Southern Ontario, Canada, where slavery had been outlawed. -
Combahee River Raid
Tubman leter guided the Combahee River Raid liberating more than 750 slaves. -
