Summary: The Trojan War occurred around 1200 B.C. It began after Helen was kidnapped by Paris. Paris was a prince of Troy. So, Menelaus, who was Helen's husband, recruited kings and soldiers from all over Greece to help him avenge his honor and recover his wife. -

Analysis: Odysseus gained something from the Trojan War. He gained more power over his island and Troy because him and his crew were trying to defeat the peopleTroy for so long, and they finally defeated them. We learn that Odysseus and his crew failed to defeat the people of Troy and they finally defeated them. This location helps to develop themes of The Odyssey because the theme is fighting for your people, fighting for what you believe in and not giving up. -

Aeolus-Bag of the wind
Summary: Aeolus gave Odysseus a bag of wind. Odysseus and his men used this bag to get back to their home, in the island of Ithaca. Odysseus' men thought that the bag was full of gold. His men thought that he took the gold, and they started not to trust him. Analysis: Odysseus learned something from this situation. He learned, no matter how hard things get, you have to be responsible. Odysseus' trust was underestimated by his men. This was wrong, of his men, because they have been through a lot. -

Circe
Summary: Circe put Odysseus' men under a spell, and turned them into pigs. Circe gave his men food and drinks. She gave them food and drinks to let their guard down. The men eating the food and drinks, made them fall into the snare. Analysis: This situation shows Odysseus' character. This shows that Odysseus fights for what he believes in and also for people he cares about. Odysseus didn't eat or drink until his men were free. This also shows that Odysseus is a powerful and resilient leader. -

Suitors/Home
Summary: The suitors were very ill-mannered. They were also piggish men. They invaded Penelope and Telemachus' palace, while Odysseus was gone. They slaughtered livestock, harassed Penelope for her hand in marriage, and they ate all the food. Analysis: There were over a hundred suitors. They were maybe called suitors, because it made them seem like more of a heavy force. Penelope and Telemachus had to unite against the suitors. The suitors were a bother, and they wanted to take over the palace. -

Sirens
Summary: The sirens were lovely things, that Odysseus and his men approached, on the island. During this time, Circe gave Odysseus instructions. Her instructions were to plug his men's ears with beeswax. Odysseus followed Circe's instructions. Analysis: At this time, I learned something about Odysseus. I learned that he wanted to be different. He did because he wanted to get tied up and hear the song, and everyone else didn't want to hear it. The song was helpful, because it revealed the future. -

Scylla and Charybdis
Summary: Scylla was a six-headed monster. Charybdis was a ginormous whirlpool. Scylla swallowed one sailor for each head, when ships pass. Charybdis threatened to swallow the whole ship when it passed. Analysis: Odysseus and his men tried to avoid Scylla and Charybdis. Odysseus and his men had to navigate a path through them. With Odysseus' bravery and his leadership they were able to navigate a path through them. Odysseus took care of responsibility in this situation, for him and his men. -

Helio's cattle
Summary: In the Helio's cattle, Helios, in an angry way, asked Zeus to punish Odysseus and his men, for killing Helio's cattle. Zeus did what was asked of him. When the men were at sea, Zeus sent a storm. The storm destroyed Odysseus and his men's ship and killed everyone except Odysseus. Analysis: I learned that the men were disrespectful. They were because they ignored the omens and continued to feast on the cattle. Their lives were doomed. They were supposed to be respectful, in this world. -

Summary: The Lotus-eaters were a race of people living on an island. They were dominated by Lotus plants. The Lotus-eaters were encountered by the Greek hero, Odysseus, during Odysseus' return from Troy. The Lotus eaters were also located by, the fifth century B.C. historian, Herodotus, on the Libyan coast. Analysis: The Lotus-eaters exposed Odysseus' crew weaknesses. They also couldn't resist the temptation. The Lotus-eaters had an impact on Odysseus. They also had an impact on Odysseus' crew. -

Cyclops
Summary: The Cyclops was a big human who was not lifelike. The Cyclops name was Polyphemus. The Cyclops ate two of Odysseus' men. Odysseus and his men didn't want to kill him because the Cyclops was the only one who was strong enough to move the boulder in front of the cave. Analysis: The Cyclops was Odysseus and his men escapes plan. Odysseus didn't want to kill the Cyclops so he stabbed him in the eye. The Cyclops was very powerful. So, Odysseus and men took it to their advantage to escape.
