The Dominican Republic gains its independence from Haiti after the Dominican Independence War. Before this war, the whole island of Hispaniola had been under Haitian rule for over 22 years when Haiti occupied the newly founded Dominican Republic in 1822. -
Francois Duvailer becomes President
Francois "Papa Doc" Duvailer wins the Haitian presidential election. He practically elected himself for the position. He did not do much with best intentions for Haiti, and was mainly concerned on retaining power for his children to become his sucessor. -
Michele Bennett marries Baby Doc
Michele Bennett married Jean- Claude Duvalier on this day. She fled to France with her husband after he was deposed and is still there. Michele Bennett spent enormous amounts of money.She eventually divorced him in 1990 and she currently uses her maiden name. In 2010, Ms. Bennett flew to Haiti to look for her brother in the rubble of the earthquake. She never found him. She currently resides in France. -
Baby Doc overthrown
Jean- Claude Duvailer (Baby Doc) served as President unitl he was overthrown. He was the son of the previous dictator Francois Duvailer who died. He was succeeded by Henri Namphy. -
Louisiane Saint Fleurant's death
Louisiane Saint Fleurant was a Haitian painter. She painted scenes depicting females, children, trees, wild life and Haitian vodou paintings. She is also known for being the founder of the peasant Saint Soleil art movement. Click here for more. -
