•The National Firearms Act
The first to bring about gun-control. It placed a tax on the making and selling of certain firearms, such as machine guns and shotguns that were commonly involved in organized crime, and required that these firearms were registered. -
•The Federal Firearms Act
REQUIRED THE LICENSING OF GUN DEALERS, WHO MUST RECORD THEIR SALES. IT PROHIBITED SALES TO INDIVIDUALS UNDER INDICTMENT OR CONVICTED OF CRIMES OF VIOLENCE. -
•The Gun-Control Act
AFTER THE ASSASSINATIONS OF PRESIDENT JOHN KENNEDY, ROBERT KENNEDY, AND REV. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR, PRESIDENT LYNDON B. JOHNSON WINS PASSAGE OF THE OMNIBUS CRIME CONTROL AND SAFE STREETS ACT OF 1968 AND THE GUN CONTROL ACT OF 1968. THIS BECOMES THE PRIMARY FEDERAL LAW REGULATING FIREARMS. PROHIBITING FELONS, DRUG USERS, AND MENTALLY ILL FROM BUYING GUNS. RAISES AGE TO BUY HANDGUNS TO 21 AND EXPANDS LICENSING REQUIREMENTS FOR DEALERS. -
FIREARMS OWNERS PROTECTION ACT OF 1986
LIMITED ATF FROM INSPECTING GUN DEALERS MORE THAN ONCE A YEAR AND BANNED CIVILIAN OWNERSHIP OF MACHINE GUNS. THIS LAW SPECIFICALLY FORBID THE GOVERNMENT FROM CREATING A NATIONAL REGISTRY OF GUN OWNERSHIP. -
THE BRADY HANDGUN VIOLENCE PREVENTION ACT OF 1993
Placed more restrictions on firearm sales, by requiring gun dealers to perform a background check on potential buyers through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). -
•The Assault Weapons Ban
THE VIOLENT CRIME CONTROL AND LAW ENFORCEMENT ACT OF 1994 PRODUCED A 10 YEAR BAN ON THE MANUFACTURE OF NEW SEMI-AUTOMATIC ASSAULT WEAPONS. THIS LAW ALSO LIMITED MAGAZINES TO 10 ROUNDS. THIS BAN EXPIRED IN 2004. -
