Indigenous Period
The indigenous people who inhabited Guaca were the Chitareros, belonging to the Guanes group, members of the Chibcha family that inhabited the Cundiboyacense highlands. The chitareros were distributed in four groups: Cámara, El Cerrito, Mongotocoro and Listara. -

Guaca was founded
Guaca is a Colombian municipality located in the department of Santander; it is part of the province of García Rovira.
Guaca was founded on April 12, 1553, by Ortun Velasco de Velasquez.
The word GUACA comes from the Indian word "Guajunca" which means hidden or buried treasure. -

Hispanic Period
Guaca was discovered by the German Ambrosio Alfinger, who had been hired by the bankers "Bartolomé and Antonio Welser". From the German company of Ausburg. In 1550 Orsua left Pamplona for Bogota and left as lieutenant Ortun Velasquez, who was later appointed Governor and finally, the King of Spain granted him the title of the encomienda of Guaca, as gratification for the services rendered. -
Republican Period
Between 1845 and 1863, there was consolidation, the triumph of the free change parties and the traditional parties evolved in their form of government, going from a centralist system to a radical federalist system.
Around this time, disputes arose between the parties and the gerrillas. -
Guaca intake
Guaca was taken by ELN guerrillas on December 11, 1997, some 300 men of the 45th front under the command of "Grannobles" entered heavily armed, at approximately 4:00 in the afternoon, attacking the police station, the mayor's office and the bank of Guaca. -

Remodeling of Guaca Park
In 2016 the main park of Guaca was remodeled, one of the changes was the fountain which was a reminder of the death of a policeman who took refuge during the seizure of 1997, in the image you can see the change of the park. -

In the last year Guaca looks very good, its streets, its stores and more have prospered and you can see how Guaca has changed a lot in the last years.
