  • Period: 499 BCE to 449 BCE

    The Persian war

    The war between Greece and the Persian empire. The Persian empire tried to conquer Greece 3 times, but ultimately failed. They wanted revenge because the Athenians helped one of the colonies residing in the Persian empire. In the battle of Marathon, Greeks won the war by using the phalanx formation. In the Battle of Thermopylae, Greeks united to stop Xerxes from taking the Athens, but eventually lost. In the battle of Salamis, Greeks sank 1/3 of Persian fleet. Greeks won the Persian war.
  • Period: 479 BCE to 431 BCE

    The golden age of Athens

    After the Persian war, Athens became very wealthy and powerful as the leader of the Delian league. Athens' economic prosperity led to the Golden age of culture and democracy. Pericles was the leader of Athens during the Golden age. he increased the democracy and created the strongest army. He made Athens beautiful, including the building of Parthenon. They had classical arts which portrayed ideal beaut,serene, and youthful features.Human form was celebrated, nude sculptures were common.
  • Period: 431 BCE to 404 BCE

    The Peloponnesian war

    The war between Sparta and Athens. Some of the Greek city-states wanted to leave the Delian league since the Persian empire's threat was gone. Athens punished the city-states that left the league by conquering. Sparta created the Peloponnesian league to counter the Delian league. Pericles, the leader of Athens brings all the citizens behind the city wall for protection. Athens undergoes a plague and 1/3 of the population including Pericles dies. Eventually Sparta wins the war.
  • Period: 323 BCE to 31

    Hellenism

    In Alexander's empire , the knowledge of 4 great empires(Greece, Persia, Egypt ,India) were combined. This combination of Greek influence with Eastern ideas creates a new culture known as, Hellenistic culture. Alexandria, Egypt was the most important city of Hellenistic culture and it was the city of knowledge. Had galleries, zoos, dining hall and gardens. They also had the first research library. Hellenistic art was realistic, emotional and tend to show movement. It was less perfect.
