    Persian Wars

    The Persian Empire tried to conquer Greece in 499 BC.The Empire wanted to conquer Greece for revenge because Greece helped one of the Persian Empires rivals in Anatolia. This is important cause that was the first time they emerged as one to protect Greece. There was three battles in the war. The first Battle was the Battle of Marathon. The Second was the Battle of Thermopylae. The last Battle was Battle of Salamis. The Persians tried three time to conquered Greece but eventually failed.

    The Effects of the Persian Wars

    After fighting a gruesome war Greece is overwhelmed with being victorious over the Persians. To insure that the Persians be a problem or concern again Greece forms an alliance of Greek city states called the Delian League. The league provides a common defense in case of another attack. The leader of the league is Athens and become very wealthy. With this new found wealth Athens build a very strong navy and become a very large empire which in the near future will become a problem.

    Golden Age of Athens

    During the Golden Age Pericles was the leader of Athens. The three goals which were to increase democracy, make the strongest navy, lastly he was to make Athens more beautiful which was one of the main reasons the Parthenon was built. Classical Art was very important during this time beauty was illustrated as being youthful and symmetry. During this time Greeks created and invented two genres of theatre which were Tragedy and Comedy. The play writers were Aeschylus and Sophocles.

    Peloponnesian Wars

    The Peloponnesian War was inevitable because Athens was overpowering the other city states being the leader of the Delian League. To retaliate Sparta made the Peloponnesian League. During the war Pericles put his citizens behind walls for protection. Because of the compact space people catch a plague and kills 1/3 of the population. With the city states weakened Philip the second of Macedonia conquered Greece. This all was Recorded by a historian named Thucydides.
