    The Persian Wars

The Persian Empire tried to conquer Greece 3 times but failed. The Persians wanted their revenge after the Athenians helped one of their colonies residing in the Persian Empire rebel against Persian rule. Darius then vowed to defeat Athens. The battle of Marathon, then Themopylae, then Salamis occurred(these were not the only battles, but they were the major ones). These Wars were significant because it was the first time that the Greeks came together and defeated a common enemy.

    The Golden Age of Athens

Athens became very wealthy and powerful as they became the leader of the Delian League. Athens' economic prosperity led to the Golden Age of culture (sculpture, theater, philosophy) and democracy. Classical Art (a large factor of the Golden Age) portrayed ideal beauty, serene and youthful figures. Harmony, order, balance, symmetry, and proportion were crucial. The Golden Age created the standard theater that we all know today, and it created philosophy that we still stand by and use today.

    Peloponnesian War

The Pelopennesian War was caused by Athens abusing their power as the leader of the Delian League. They had created this League due to the threat of the Persians, but as they were no longer a threat, city-states started to leave the League which caused Athens to conquer the city-states. The Pelopennesian League was created by Sparta to fight Athens. Sparta won the war. This is a significant event because it stopped Athens from becoming too powerful (afterwards Philip II conquered all of Greece).

    Hellenism

When Alexander created his empire he combined the knowledge of 4 great empires (Greece, Persia, Egypt, and India). This combination along with Greek influence created a new culture known as Hellenistic culture. Hellenistic Art used Realism (which made people look more natural), and the sculptures were more realistic, emotional, and tended to show more movement (they were much less perfect). This was an important step for history because it started a more advanced art style that was famous.
