  • Period: 499 BCE to 449 BCE

    The Persian Wars

    The Persian War was between the Persian Empire and the Greek city-states. It took place in 499-449 B.C.E.The War was started after Athens helped Persian colonies revolt against the Persian Empire. The king wanted revenge.There were three major battles. The Battle of Marathon,Thermopylae and the Battle of Salamis, in which the Greeks finally won the War.The Persian Wars had a significant effect. It helped Athens become the leader of the Delian league and was the cause of the Golden Age of Athens.
  • Period: 431 BCE to 404 BCE

    The Peloponnesian War

    The Peloponnesian War, from 431-404 B.C.E.,was between Athens and Sparta, as a result of Athens becoming too powerful as the leader of the Delian League. As the war went on, the king of Athens brought all the citizens in the city walls. But a plague wiped out 1/3 of the population. Allowing Sparta to fight and win against Athens. But the war had left both Sparta and Athens weak and in ruins. This allowed Phillip the Second of Macedonia to conquer Greece and lead to the fall of Athens and Sparta.

    Alexander The Greats' Empire

    Alexander the Great took over ruling when his father died in 336 B.C.E. Alexander the Great as ruler conquered the Persian Empire, Anatolia, Egypt and parts of India during his rule. He named Alexandria after himself.The city became an important city for research, learning and culture. Alexander the Great,on his way back from conquering India, died in 323 B.C.E.of disease. The empire had brought together many cultures and people, leaving lasting effects as well as a whole new culture, Hellenism.

    The Rise of Hellenism

    Hellenism was the result of the combined knowledge of four main cultures, Greek, Persian, Egyptian, and Indian cultures. Alexandria was the main city were Hellenism was centered. Hellenism brought along museums, the first research library with half a million scrolls, and realism in sculptures. Hellenism helped influence mathematicians, scientists and philosophers in Alexandria. Hellenism grew after the death of Alexander the Great in 323 B.C.E.and died down as the Roman Empire grew in 31 B.C.E.
