  • Period: 499 BCE to 449 BCE

    Persian Wars

    The Persian Wars consisted of the Persians and the Greeks.It was a battle of over Greece and three battles were fought,the Battle of Marathon,the Battle of Thermopylae,and the Battle of Salamis.The Greeks won the Battle of Marathon with the phalanx formation.Both the Battle of Thermopylae and Salamis were won through an alliance between the Spartans and Athenians, Thermopylae being fought through a mountain pass and Salmis was fought on the water and was won by the Greeks.
  • Period: 479 BCE to 431 BCE

    Golden Age

    Athens flourished after the defeat of the Persians and the leader role in the Delian League.Economy and culture were on the rise.Democracy was becoming much more frequent due to the leadership of Pericles.Classical art had an impact on culture for it sought out the divinity of each and everyone and really represented Athens superiority and pureness.Their theatre was split up between comedy and tragedy, but all of this would soon fall.
  • Period: 478 BCE to 404 BCE

    Delian League

    The Delian League was lead by Athens and other Greek city-states.Their purpose was to defend Greece from the Persians,but after the defeat of the Persian Empire,the city-states wanted out because they were not fond of the membership fees.Athens was too powerful for they were the leader of the Delian League and built a powerful navy and have become a trading empire.Their power led them to believe that anyone who leaves the league will be conquered and colonized.Athens continued their reign.
  • Period: 469 BCE to 399 BCE

    Socrates

    Socrates was a Greek philosopher who believed that people should obey the law even though they believe the law is not a good law.He roamed around the city with his students,teaching them,and explaining his ideas to them.Socrates taught by asking questions and had much wisdom,but he was arrested and killed for the Athenians were not fond of his beliefs and criticism.
  • Period: 431 BCE to 404 BCE

    Peloponnesian War

    Sparta and other city-states could no longer tolerate Athens reign.In turn they banded together to form the Peloponnesian League which eventually defeated the Athenians.Sparta’s military advantage was overwhelming and unfortunately Athens underwent a tragedy that helped with Athens downfall.
  • Period: 431 BCE to 404 BCE

    Peloponnesian League

    Sparta creates the Peloponnesian League in order to stop the Delian League.Sparta and the Peloponnesian League were moving Athenian forces back into their own city.Athens would not back down so easily,so in turn the Peloponnesian War started.
  • Period: 430 BCE to 427 BCE

    Plague in Athens

    For the next 3 years,Athens would undergo a great plague that would kill more than 33% of the population.This disease started out in Ethiopia and then eventually made it’s way to Athens when it was ironically a time in which disease was not as frequent compared to past years.The plague aided in the destruction of Athens and helped the Peloponnesian League defeat the Delian League.
  • Period: 336 BCE to 323 BCE

    Alexander the Great’s empire

    Alexander took the throne in 336 B.C.E when his father passed away.His goal was to finish what Philip the II started,which was to build a great empire that exceeded the Persian Empire.Alexander not only conquered the Persians,but also claimed Greece.He went on to conquer Egypt and founded a city there,Alexandria.India was his next conquest,but unfortunately,Alexander soon died from a disease.
