  • Period: 499 BCE to 449 BCE

    Persian Wars

    The Persian Empire tried conquered Greece and wanted to revenged after the Athenians helped one of their colonies. The Persian Wars took place during 499~449 BCE and many battles including Battle of Marathon initiated by Darius ended up with the victory of Greeks. This war was of importance in that it was the first time that Greece, which had been divided into city-states made united and even feel solidarity fighting together against external forces.
  • Period: 461 BCE to 429 BCE

    King of Pericles(Golden Age of Athens)

    After Persian War, Athens was at its Golden Age. Especially during Pericles’ tenure 461-429 BCE, it had the best time in various fields such as economy, politics and art. Pericles increased democracy encouraging people’s direct participation. Furthermore, art, architecture and theatre were in their height with economic prosperity. This period is significant in that it presented a prototype of direct democracy for today’s politics and led to enormous progress of culture and art.
  • Period: 431 BCE to 404 BCE

    Peloponnesian War

    Athens had too much power as a leader of Delian League. Naturally many wanted to leave the harsh league membership. However if one tried to, it was followed by Athens’ revenge. Finally Sparta created the Peloponnesian and the Peloponnesian War lasted during 431~404 BCE. The war ended with the victory of Sparta, however the aftermath of the war led to the weakness of all city-states including Athens and Sparta, which eventually led to the destruction of ancient Greece.
  • Period: 336 BCE to 323 BCE

    Alexander the Great(Domination of Macedonia)

    After Peloponnesian War Greek city-states were weakened, and finally was under the domination of Macedonia during 336~323 BCE. Alexander of Macedonia also conquered Egypt, Persia and India building a great empire although the empire split when he died at 33. Under the domination of Alexander of Macedonia, Greek influence spread around the world and at the same time Greece began to go away from city-states oriented society. It might be the beginning of Hellenism.
