    The Persian Wars

    The Persian Wars consisted of three battles fought between Persia and Greece in Persia's attempts to conquer Greece.This conflict started after the Athenians helped one of their colonies in Anatolia revolt against Persian rule, causing the king of Persia to try and conquer Greece.The first battle was the Battle of Marathon, where the Greeks beat the Persians by using a phalanx.The Greeks were defeated in the Battle of Thermopylae, but the Greeks beat the Persians in the Battle of Salamis.

    The Golden Age of Athens

    The Golden Age of Athens started when Athens became powerful and wealthy from being the leader of the Delian League.Pericles,the ruler of Athens,beautified Athens and improved its culture.Athens created classical arts such as sculptures and intricate columns.The Greeks invented new genres in Greek theatre like tragedy and comedy.Athens also strengthened and improved its democracy,creating more equality.The Golden Age created the classic and iconic Greece and led to the Peloponnesian War.

    The Peloponnesian War

    The Peloponnesian War was fought between Athens and Sparta.Athens was the leader of the Delian League,but became too powerful and controlling, causing Sparta to create the Peloponnesian League to defeat Athens.The leader of Athens,Pericles,brought all the citizens behind the city walls for protection.However,Athens goes through a plague,causing 1/3 of the population to die.Sparta easily defeats Athens and wins the war.This war made both the city-states weak,allowing Phillip II to conquer Greece.

    Philip II of Conquers Greece

    After the Peloponnesian War, Athens and Sparta were very weakened, making it easy for Philip II of Macedonia to conquer Greece. Philip II died soon after, making his son, Alexander the Great, king of Greece. The conquering of Greece was important because it was the first time Greece had been successfully defeated and it led to the rise of Hellenism, which was the combination of multiple cultures to create a new culture.
