    Persian wars

    Athens and The Persian Empire were in a battle.The first battle that took place was the Battle of Marathon, at the City-state Marathon where the Greeks won, using the Phalanx formation. The second battle was the Battle of Thermopylae,which the Athenians lost,the Persians were trying to pass through the mountain pass Xerxes.The last battle was the Battle of Salamis, a sea battle, which the Greeks won.The Persian Empire wanted revenge over the Greeks.This war increased Greece's land and economics.

    The Golden Age

    The Golden Age occurred between the Persian Wars and the Peloponnesian Wars.This was created when Athens became very powerful and wealthy as leader of the Delian League.The Golden Age was held in Athens,where Pericles the leader of Athens during the Golden Age increased democracy, created the strongest navy, and made Athens beautiful, including the building of the Parthenon, which was made for Athena.Classical art and theatre,were invented during this time.Created economic prosperity for Athens.

    Peloponnesian War

    The Peloponnesian war was against Athens and Sparta because,Athens became too powerful as leader of the Delian League. Pericles,leader of Athens,took his citizens behind the city's wall for protection. During this time a plague takes over Athens where 1/3 of Athenian population dies including Pericles. Therefore, the Spartans easily win.Because of this war, Greece is very weak, thus King Phillip the second, King of Macedonia, easily conquers Greece, making him the ruler of Greece.
  • Period: 356 BCE to 323 BCE

    Alexander The Great

    Alexander The Great was King Phillip the second's son. When King Phillip was murdered at his daughters wedding Alexander became king of Macedonia at age 20. Alexander conquered four great empires, Greece, Anatolia, Egypt, Persia, and India.Once he reached India he turned back and not long after died of Malaria at age 33. The historical significance shows that Alexander The Great could conquer Greece while the Persian Empire could not.
