China desperatly wanted to modernize and the group pushing for that was the Kuomintang. Their first leader was Sun Yixian. In 1911 they succedded in overthrowing the last emporer of the Qing Dynasty who had ruled sine 1644. -
World War I begins as Austria declares war of Serbia
Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie were making a visit to Sarajevo, Bosinia on June 28th,1914. They were shot by Serbian Gavrilo Princip, a member of the Black Hand.Austrians then punished Serbia and declared war on July 28th 1914. Because of all the allies European countries had made, the world began war. -
U.S. Enters the war
Because of Germany's unrestricted submarine warfare, they sunk all ships in the waters around Britain. They sunk a British passenger ship, the Lusitania which left 128 US citizens dead. Then, the Germans sent the Zimmerman telegram to Mexico was the US intercepted it. It stated that if Mexico helped them with the war, they would help win back the land Mexico lost to the US. Then on Aprl 2, 1917 the US declared war on Germany and entered the war on the allies side. -
Armistice signed as Allies defeat Central Powers
The Central Powers began to stuggle. Both the Bulgarians and Ottomans surrendered. On November 9,. 1918, Kaiser Wilhelm stepped down and Germany declared itself a republic. A representative from the new German government met with French Commander Marshal Foch in a railway ear Paris. They signed the armistice which is an agreement to stop fighting. Then, on November 11, WW1 ended. -
Gandhi leads Indian camapaign of civil disobedience
The massacre at Amritsar set the stage for Muhandas Gandhi to become leader of the independence movement. His strategy was non violent resistance. He would call for boycotts and refuse to buy British goods. He even weaved their own cloth so they didn't have to buy British. In 1930, he organized a salt march. He refused to buy salt from the British so he and his followers marched 240 miles to the sea to make their own salt. It was a successful peace protest. -
Mustafa Kemal transforms Turkey into Republic
In 1919 Greece invaded Turkey but the Turkish sultan was powerless. In 1922 a brilliant commander, Mustafa Kemal led the Turkish nationalists in fighting back and they won. They then overthrew the last Ottoman sultan. He then became president in 1923 and his goal was to modernize. He is known as father of the turks. -
MaoZedong heads Long March
Jainge Jieshi was leader the Koumintang or the Nationalist party and he surronded the comminists mountain stronghold in 1933. Outnumbered, the Communist Party forces then fled. They began a 6,000 mile-long journeey called the Long March between 1934-1935. Then, Mao and a few thousand other Communist Ssurvivors settled in caves in nothwestern China. The civil war continued and the Communists then won.
