    the Famous Five petitioned for women to be recognized as persons. The Supreme Court of Canada ruled women as not “persons”. The Privy Council of England revered the court’s ruling deciding the women should be considered persons. This impacted Canada because it opened the Senate to women, enabling them to work for change in both the House of Commons and the Upper House.
  • Stock Market Crash

    Stock Market Crash
    investors started selling the stocks to cash in on high profits, and soon after others started to do the same. As a result, stock prices fell. People did not want them anymore and quickly tried to sell them which caused the prices to drop even more. This caused the crash. It is important to Canada because companies cut back on production which resulted in job loss. Also, there was no export which meant no money coming in to the country.

    Drought on Prairies
    to take advantage of the boom farmers planted wheat. Planting just one crop sucks up all the nutrients from the soil. The drought was a major problem and winds were added to the mix. A plague of grasshoppers cascaded onto the land. This event affected thousands of families because it forced them to leave their lands and they were struggling to survive.

    his government brought in the Unemployment Relief Act, which provinces got $20 million for work-creation programs but the economy did not improve. He raised tariffs by 50% which did harm in the long run. He was an ineffective leader for Canada

    this was relief payments that were given to those that did not have another source of income. Payments ranged from $19 a month to $60 a month dependning on the province. People were humiliated during the process of trying to recieve it. It had an impact on Canada because it was an effort to help those that were in need who were barely making it.

    they were the first socialist party. The CCF supported a system in which the government controlled the economy so Canadian’s would be get benefitted equally. J.S Woodsworth was chosen as leader at a Regina convention. This party is to be recognized as helping to create Canada’s social welfare system.

    The On-to-Ottawa Trek & Regina Riot
    a rail trip from Vancouver to Ottawa (stopped at Regina) by unemployed men to protest conditions of relief camps and demand higher pay. Bennett had the RCMP stop them in Regina. He referred to the leaders as communist radicals and troublemakers. These events were significant to Canada because it gave voters all the more reason to not elect him again.

    the German had attacked Poland on this day . Britain along with France declared war on Germany for it. The crippling economy paved a way for another war. It is important to Canada because the economy had boomed and strengthened. Canada was further molded into an independent country.
