Magna Carta
This was a charter signed by King John that stopped taxation without legisture approval. This means King John could no longer tax the people without Parliament's consent. -
Petition of Right
This is a major English constitutional that basically set rights and liberties the King could not take away. -
English Bill of Rights
This was an English statue confirming the decloration of rights. This act was made by parliament. -
Albany Plan of Union
This was Benjamin Franklin's proposal to create a unified government for the 13 colonies. in Albany, New York. -
Boston Massacre
This was a fight that occured on the streets of Boston when a "patriot" mob began to throw objects at British souldiers. Many colonist were killed. -
Boston Tea Party
This took place when colonist invaded 3 British ships in the Boston harbor. They destroyed all their cargo of tea to protest taxtion by dumping it into the sea. -
First Continental Congress
This was a meeting of 12 of the 13 delegates from the colonies. They met in Philidelphia. -
Second Continental Congree
This was a group of delegates that began to meet in the summer of 1775 in Peensylvania shortly after war had struck. -
Declaration of Independence
This document established the United States as a single nation. It was written in whole by Thomas Jefferson. -
Articles of Confederation
This is the original consitiution of the U.S. It was replaced by the constitution in 1789. The Article of Confederation set out regulations each state promised to obey. -
Shay's Rebellion
This was an uprising led by a former militia officer, Daniel Shays. Shay's followers protested the foreclosuers of farms in dept and briefly shut down the courts. -
Philadelphia Convention
This meeting was made to design a government with seperate legislative, executive, and juducial branches. All states were invited to send delegates to attend. -
Virginia Plan
This plan was purposed by the Virgina delegates for a bicameral legislative branch. The Virgina Plan is also known as the Randolph Plan. -
