Magna Carta
Magna Carta was an attempt to limit the King of England's powers and protect the United States' rights. It was also the first document that the the Kings subjectss said that he should read. -
Petition of Right
The Petition of Right declared our rights of the people. It was considered second of importance to the Magna Carta. -
English Bill of Rights
The English Bill of Rights was a restatement of the Declaration of Rights. It limits the powers of the crown and sets the rules of freedom of speech and the right to have fair elections. -
Albany Plan of Union
The Albany Plan was written by Benjamin Franklin. It states him trying to form a union of the states under one government during the French and Indian War. -
Boston Massacre
During the Boston Massacre, five colonists were killed by British soilders. It was caused by the tensions between the Americans and the Royal troops. These tensions were caused by the heavy taxes from the Townshend Acts. -
Boston Tea Party
The Boston Tea Party was a protest by the Sons of Liberty in Boston, against the high taxes that the British government controlled on the imported tea. -
First Continental Congress
The First Continental Congress was a meeting discussing the Corecive Acts. These Acts were the result of the Boston Tea Party. -
Second Continental Congress
The Second Continental Congress was a meeting between the 13 colonies in Pennsylvania. It managed the colonial war effort and moved towards independence. -
Articles of Confederation
The Articles of Confederation was an agreement between the 13 states saying that they were the United States of America. It served as their consitution. It was later to be replaced by the US Constitution in 1789. -
Declaration of Independence
The Declaration of Independence was a document that stated our freedom from the British Empire. It made the 13 colonies into the United States of America. -
Shays' Rebellion
Shays' Rebellion was a fight that took place in Massachusetts. It was named after Daniel Shays, one of the rebel leaders. -
Virginia Plan
The Virginia Plan is also known as the Randolph Plan. It was thought of by Virginia to have a bicameral legislative branch. It stated the idea of population-weighted representation. -
New Jersey Plan
The New Jersey Plan was a document that stated changes in the United States government. It was in response to the Virginia Plan, which called for two houses of Congress. The change they wanted was one vote per state. -
Philadelphia Convention
The Philadelphia Convention was held to address problems with the United States government. During the meeting, they were supposed to revise the Articles of Confederations, but they decided to make a new government.
