Government Project

  • Absolute Monarchy in place

Previous to the constitutional democracy, in my country there was an absolute monarchy. Citizens were heavily taxed, and not allowed many personal freedoms. Press was not allowed to publish any articles that would go against the Queen, Queen Anne X, nor were any groups to gather in order to discuss the government.

  • A Revolution is Beginning

People began to grow tired of the strict rule of the Queen, so talk of a Revolution was beginning. Men in local villages began to meet in secret, discussing if they should truly revolt or not. Some villages began preparing small militias, in case a war was stirring.
  • The First Act of Rebellion

After tensions began rising between the citizens and the monarchy, the first act of open rebellion happened in the form of a newspaper. A popular newspaper, The Post, published an article calling for a revolution against the Queen, and stating all the atrocities she had committed against her people. All 81 employees of the newspaper was arrested for treason, and sentenced to execution, in order to make an example of them. Though, this only encouraged the people to revolt.
  • The Post Massacre of 1680

On the day of execution, hundreds of people showed up to witness the execution of the newspaper employees. However, once the execution began, several people began throwing rocks at the executioner and guards. After that. chaos ensued. Guards that were there began firing at the crowd, and many civilians began fleeing the scene. Over 200 people died that day, including "the Post" employees. This event angered the citizens, thus increasing the tensions between them and the government.
  • The First Revolt

After The Post Massacre, much of the country was extremely tired of dealing with the government. So, citizens living in the capital began planning to form a revolt. So, on August 13th, citizens began to storm government buildings, trying to overtake them. They failed to capture any buildings, due to the lack of forces, and soldiers put in the city killed anyone trying to revolt. However, this marked the beginning of the end.
  • A New Government

With the Queen agreeing to accept a constitution, well respected members of the country (scholars, philosophers, professors, etc.)began to create a new government. After much debate, they decided to create a constitutional monarchy. The Queen would still rule, however she would have extremely limited powers. A parliament and prime minister would be elected by the people, which would do most of the legislative power. The constitution also recognized key rights of the people.
  • Demands

Throughout the next few months, in villages all over the country, chaos insured, with citizens killing any law enforcement within their area. They began gathering, and making their demands extremely clear. The people of the country wanted to have a constitution, and within this constitution they wanted representation and recognition of their rights. This became too big of a problem to simply ignore anymore, so Anne the X finally caved in and agreed to a constitution created by the citizens.
