Magna Carta
The first document to limit the powers of government. King John signed the Magna Carta in the 1215, thus limiting his power and influence of the people. -
Virginia House of Burgesses
The first legislative assembly in the North America. Members were elected by the people. -
Mayflower Compact
The Pilgrims signed this to signify their plans for self-government. -
English Bill of Rights
This document wrote the limits of what the leaders/rulers could do and could not do. In the document it states that the ruler can not pass taxes without the approval of Parliament. -
French and Indian War
This war was between Britain and France, but eventually other countries got involved in the war. Britain eventually won and took control of the eastern gulf, and kicked the French out. -
Stamp Act
This was the first tax that was imposed on the colonist in the New World. Taxes were placed on legal documents, newspaper, and even dices and playing cards. -
Boston Tea Party
The Sons of Liberty did this as a political protest aganist Britain when they taxed tea. They dressed up as Indians and threw over tea into the sea. -
First Continental Congress
An assembly, that took place in Philadelphia, about what to do with their relation to Great Britain. -
Lexington and Concord
This was the first battle of the American Revolution. This battle was fought between British and the Colonists. -
Second Continental Congress
In this assembly, the colonists decided to raise an army and fight for their independence. -
Declaration of Independence
The colonists finally decided to break away from Great Britian. The document was signed by all 56 delegates. -
Articles of Confederation
This document stated the structure of government among the 13 Colonies. -
Peace Treaty with Great Britain
The 13 Colonies and Great Britain has finally signed a peace treaty. -
Shay's Rebellion
When the Colonies fell into an economic crisis, farmers armed themselves and forced courts to ensure they keep their farms. -
Constitutional Convention
A meeting for the purpose of changing or regulating the constitution. -
Virginia Plan
The Virginia Plan was first introduced by Edmund Randolph, and he proposed the government to be based on three principles. -
Connecticut Compromise
Roger Sherman, delegation from Connecticut, proposed a compromise that combined with the Virginia Plan and New Jersey Plan. -
New Jersey Plan
The man to introduce this was William Paterson. He proposed that the government should be based on the major features of the Articles of Confederation. -
3/5 Compromise
This was the compromise that slaves are not to be counted as one whole representative, so they would 3/5 of a representative. -
