The Mayflower Compact was signed aboard ship on November 11, 1620 by the Pilgrims. The Mayflower Compact was the first governing document of Plymouth Colony. -
English Bill of Rights
This was a bill passed by the Parliament of England. It limited powers of royal figures and caused separation of power. -
Albany Plan of Union
It was a plan to put the colonies under one, centralized government. Seven of the British North American colonies introduced the plan in 1754. -
Stamp Act
This was a new tax that required Americans to pay tax on every bit of paper they were responsible for using. The money went toward protecting the American frontier. -
Boston Massacre
This was the day that five colonists were killed by British citizens in response to the American colonies being bombarded with tax laws. -
Boston Tea Party
Samuel Adams and company boarded three ships in the Boston Harbor on a December night in 1773. They threw over 300 barrels of tea overboard to rebel against the taxes imposed by the government. -
Intolerable Acts
These acts were meant to punish the colonists of Massachusettes. They were imposed after word got to the British about the Boston Tea Party. -
First Continental Congress
Representatives from twelve of the thirteen colonies met at Carpenter's Hall in Philadelphia. It was to discuss the Intolerable Acts imposed by the British Government. -
American Revolution Begins
This was the rebellion of the thirteen American colonies against the British powers. The people rebelled because of the taxes and controlling British parliament and it was in order to gain their freedom. -
Second Continental Congress
Soon after the American Revolution fighting had begun, representatives from the thirteen colonies met in Philadelphia once again. The Declaration of Independence was created and it ultimately formed the United States. -
Declaration of Independence
This declared the colonie's separation from the British. After this was signed in Philadelphia, the United States were completely independent. -
Articles of Confederation
Document signed by the 13 original colonies in 1777. It established the United States as a confederation and was the nation's first constitution. -
Shay's Rebellion
Daniel Shay led a group of rebels in an armed uprising in Massachusettes. The plan was to ultimately overthrow the controlling government. -
Philadelphia Convention
This was to address the problems of the US. The country had been under the Articles of Confederation at the time after gaining it's independence. -

Conneticut Compromise
Also known as the Great Compromise, it defined the role each state would play under the Constitution. This affected larger and smaller states and determined the legislative structure of each.
