Magna Carta
The Magna Carta was a document that guaranteed fundamental rights as trial by jury and due process of law. KIng John was forced to sign the Magna Carta, the ones who forced him were a group of determined barons. -
Petition of Right
back in 1628 the king was forced to sign the Petition of Right. This petition limited the king's power in several ways. -
English Bill of Rights
The English bill of rights prohibited a standing army in peacetime, except with the consent of Parliament. This document also included such guarantees as the right to a fair trial. -
Albany Plan of Union
The Albany Plan of Union was a plan suggested by Benjamin Franklin. The plan proposed the creation of an annual congress of delegates form each of the thirteen colonies. -
Virginia Plan
The virginia plan was presented by Randolph, though was largely the work of Madison. This plan called for a new government with three separate branches: legislative, executive, and judicial. -
Boston Massacre
The Boston Massacre was the event where British troops fired on a jeering crowd. In this event five were killed. -
Boston Tea Party
The Boston Tea Party was an event where a group of men, disguised as neative americans, boarded three teaships in Boston Harbor. They dumped the ships cargo into the sea to protest the British control of the tea trade. -
First Continental Congress
The first continental Congress was composed of delegates from every colony, except georgia. They met to discuss the worsening situation and to debate plans for action. -
Second Continental Congress
The Second continental Congress was a group of delegates, some of the more famous being Benjamin Franklin and John Hancock. Later on, the second continental congress became the nation's first national government. -
Declaration of Independence
The Declaration of Independence gave the Colonies the right to let their people rule themselves, before then people ruling themselves was unheard of. -
Articles of Confederation
The Articles of Confederation established a firm league of friendship among the states. the Articles allowed each state to keep its sovereignty, freedom, and independence. -
Shay's Rebellion
An armed uprising lead by Daniel Shays, who had served as an officer in the war for independence. during this rebellion Shays even lead an unsuccessful attack on the federal arsenal at Springfield. -
New Jersey Plan
the Jersey Plan called for a federal executive of more than one person, this plural executive could be chosen by congress. this plan would add closely limited powers to tax and to regulate trade between the states. -
Philadelphia Convention
Delegates met to work on building a new government that could meet the needs of the nation. Later on these delegates would become the framers for the constitution.
