Magna Carta
The Magna Carta limited the king's rule. It challenged the monarch and gave more rights to the people. -
Jamestown Settled
The first permanent American settlement. Founded under the colonial rule of Virginia. -
Mayflower Compact
The governing document written by the pilgrims establishing Plymouth County. The compact set a common goal and purpose for the establishment. -
Petition of Right
Created rights that the king could not interfere with. Parliament gained total control over taxing rights. -
English Bill of Rights
Re-statement of the Declaration of Right limiting powers, election requirements, granting freedom of speech in parliament. The ability of being able to petition without fear of spite. -
Albany Plan of Union
A union of the colonies formed by Benjamin Franklin during the French and Indian War. It dealt with issues local governments could not handle efficiently on there own. -
Stamp Act
A tax on the colonies by Parliament requiring paper used be from London with revenue stamps embossed. Because of this, the illegal smuggling of items greatly increased. -
Boston Massacre
Five civilians were killed by British redcoats over unpopular Parliamentary legislation. Events like this helped lead up to the American Revolution -
Boston Tea Party
Colonists felt like they were not being represented as they should and threw tea overboard. The issue was over taxing without representation. -
Intolerable Acts
Lead to the establishment of the First Continental Congress. Held Bostonians responsible for the tea lost. -
First Continental Congress
Formed in response to the Coercive acts. Brought delegates together and eventually lead to the Second Continental Congress and Revolutionary War. -
American Revolution Begins
The Revolutionairy War between the colonies and Great Brittain began. All thirteen colonies were eventually involved. -
Second Continental Congress
The thirteen colonies met to discuss and manage to the war and their independence. They supplied and decided ranks of the new Continental Army. -
Declaration of Independence
The document that declared the indeependence of the thirteen American colonies seperating themselves from Great Britain. Signified the "birth" of The United States. -
Articles of Confederation
The first constitution of The United States. It took into consideration all of the needs of each individual state and was accepted by all. -
Shay's Rebellion
A private militia that dealth with finances. They went without government interference for several months. -
Connecticut Compromise
The agreement between states that wanted representation by population, and those that wanted each states vote equal. Established the Senate and House's representation. -
Philadelphia/Constitutional Convention
The thirteen colonies came together to design a new government which became the Constitution. This gave the federal government more power.
