    The treaty ended disputes between the US, Canada and Britain. It had endend an unecessary war between the two bordering countries in Britain. Although the treaty never adressed the main reasons the US declared war on Britain, it brought peace to the land.

  • Robert Fleming Gourlay

    Robert Fleming Gourlay
    Robert Gourlay was a role model in Upper Canada at the time. He advocatade for their rights and land grants. He dedicated himself to show the "government" for what it was and to eradicate corruption in the parliament. However he was arrested for protesting his rights and given an ultimatum, either stay in Canada and face death or leave the country. He came back in 1856 to run for legislature, althought he was unsuccesful, he returned to Scotland shortly after.
  • HBC & NWC amalgamate

    HBC & NWC amalgamate
    The merger of the HBC and the NWC was a nescessary action to keep the fur trade alive and both of the companies as well. The amalgamtion of these two companies resulted from various factors. The incident at Selkirks setllement in1820 being one of the main causes, the decline of the fur trade was also a main reason.

    William Lyon Mackenzie buys the Colonial Advocate
    The Colonial Advocate was a meduim for William to express his views of the family compact and the not so responsible government. The Colonial Advocate is an important part of Canada's history because it gave Canadian citizens knowledge and inspiration to fight the family compact. The newspaper was getting so big that the family compact were getting worried of of it's abilities to influence readers.

    Lord Durham's report suggested that the governor pick his adivsors from the confidence of young men in the assembly. The passage indicates that Upper Canada and Lower Canada should join together to fix the french problem

    The treaty of Oregon was signed by Britain and USA. It ended the disputed joint occupacy and created the 49th parallel. It had finally ended the confusion that was the oregon territory. Now both countries having settled their border disputes can now move on.

    The Reciprocity treaty was a trade treaty involving Great Britain, USA and the Province of Canada. It was in effect from 1854 to 1866. It opposed protectionist views of the US. There was a large increase in Canada's exports to the United States and a huge growth in Canada's economy.

    when the Metis committee went to Otawa they took with them a list of rights and freedoms which got passed. Giving the Metis for the first time ever basic rights and presence.

    Great Britain had given Ruperts Land to Canada officially in 1869. The deal was Ruperts land transfered over to Canada $300,000 to the HBC and the HBC having 20% of all arable land in the territory.

    Execution of Thomas Scott
    Scott was arrested and imprisoned in Upper Fort Garry by Louis Riel and his men while trying to attack the fort. Scott however being a Presbyterian had some other idea in his head. While being captured Scott verbally abused his captors. Shortly after this he was executed. This upset the Canadian government who in return seized the fort back.

    B.C. joined confederation because they needed an economic boost, which Canada provided. They were afraid of manifest destiny and figured joining together would make it less likely the US would invade them. B.C. also joined to have its own municipality where they could elect their own leaders. B.C. also got a railroad that went across Canada.

    The NWMP is a police force originally created and ordered to go to the prairies and patrol the area. The NWMP's job consisted of the whisky trade and making agreements with the First Nations People. This police forace later came to be known as the RCMP

    Earlier in 1885 Louis Riel started and lead the NorthWest Rebellion. After this movement was suppressed by the Canadian military, Louis was tried for 5 days then sent to the gallows. His death still echoes in the tensions between French and English Canadians.

    Canadian Pacifc Railway is done
    The railway took 4 years to complete and was a huge acomplishment at the time. Canada was the first country in the world to build a trans-continetal railway. This railway secured the promises of Canada to other colonies. A century later and this railway is still being used.

    Wilfred Laurier to Parliament
    Wilfred Laurier is Canada's first francopohne Prime Minister. Laurier promised many things to the French Canadians to get their votes however many of these things did not come to be. Laurier acted as a mediator between the French and English Canadians. He solved many problems involving the two and led Canada through industrialization and rapid growth.
