  • Dred Scott v. Sanford

    The decision by the supreme court that stated that the U.S did not extend citizenship to African Americans. and weren't allowed to have the rights of a citizen. this included the bill of rights and constitutional rights.
  • 13th amendment

    The 13th amendment, put in place in 1865, abolished slavery, and forms of involuntary servitude. it was put in place shortly after the United States civil war. this amendment is considered one of the most important for America.
  • 14th amendment

    the 14th amendment states that any persons born in the united states are naturalized citizens. this means that even if your parents weren't citizens, that you are and have the liberties of one. this amendment was especially profound for african americans, because it meant that any generation of african americans after them would be naturalized citizens
  • jim crow era

    the time period in which laws were passed to prohibit african americans from having equal rights.
  • 15th amendment

    the 15th amendment states that you arent allowed to deny someone from voting based off of their skin color, race, or "previous condition of servitude" allowing african americans the right to vote. this did not take away the states ability to stop them from doing so, as the states made unpassable literacy tests to prevent them from doing so.
  • Plessy Vs Ferguson

    This was a court case that set in place the "seperate but equal rule" legally allowing segregation. this court case would later be overturned, in Brown vs Board of education.
  • 19th amendment

    19th amendment gave women the right to vote. This meant that anyone who was a US citizen could now vote.
  • Brown Vs Board of Education

    This case in the supreme court was one of the biggest in the civil rights movement. This case overturned the "seperate but equal" rule that was set by the Plessy case. the lawyer for this case, Thurgood Marshall, would later serve on the supreme court as the first african american justice.

  • civil rights act of 1964

    banned many acts of discrimination in many parts of American life.
  • civil rights act of 1965

    This act protects the voting rights of minorities. passed by lyndon B johnson, this ensured the 14th and 15th amendment voting rights.

    This case decided that estates could not be named in a way that discriminated between sexes. the 14th amendment protects sexual discrimination.

    this case upheld georgia's right to make sodomy between consenting adults illegal, saying the constitution gives no right for homosexual intercourse
  • americans with disabilities act

    this act prohibits the discrimination based on disability. passed in 1990, the goal was to allow disabled persons to be not excluded from the rights and opportunities that americans have.

    this act made it easier for people to register to vote, allowing people to register in the mail, when you get a drivers liscense, and state offices that serve the disabled or poor

    this case overturned the ruling in bowers v hardiwck, allowing consentual, non procreative, homosexual interocurse between two adults

    this court case stated the right to marry is given to same sex couples, legalizing gay marriage.
