    A slave that lived in Illinois whom was originally from Missouri went back to Illinois and wanted freedom since Illinois was a free state, but was denied because black people could no be American Dread scott filed a lawsuit which the court ruled he was in fact still a slave and black people were not considered to be a citizens

    After the civil war, the 13th amendment was passed which supposedly abolished slavery, but states had created their own laws, making it hard for POC to survive freely.

    This was a court case in which a mixed man (Homer Plessy) was arrested because he refused to sit in the blacks-only train because under Louisiana law he was black. His lawyers said this violated his 13th and 14th amendment but the courts said places had the right to be separated as long as they were equal.
