How BackRub became Google

Larry and Sergey decided that BackRub needed a new name so they started brainstorming. They came up with Google because it is aplay word on "googol" a mathematical term for the number represented by the numeral 1 followed by 100 zeros. They use this because it reflects their mission to organize a infinate amount of information.

First Invester

Andy Bechtolsheim writes a check of $100,000 to an entity that did not exist yet called Google Inc.

Workplace

Sep 14, 1998

They set up a workplace at Susan Wojcicki’s garage. It is located at 232 Santa Margarita, Menlo Park.

Upgrade

Feb 14, 1999

They outgrow the garage and move to 165 University Avenue in Palo Alto with just 8 employees.

Webby Awards

May 12, 2000

Google wins their first Webby Awards which is voted by the users and judges.

Chairman

Eric Schmidt is named chairman.

Partnership with AOL

May 1, 2002

We offered AOL Google search and sponsored links to 34 million customers using CompuServe, Netscape and AOL.com.

Pyra Labs

We acquired Pyra Labs. They created Bloggers

Search Index 6 Billion

Their new search index hits 6 Billion. It also includes 4.28 billion web pages and 880 million images.

New Headquarters

Google moved to 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway in Mountain View. Their 800+ employees can work in a campus enviroment .

Youtube

They bought Youtube for 1.65 Billion in stocks.
