Farther hitters
By the early 20th century golfers had the desire to hit the ball further this caused many innovators come up with a new design for woods.(Woods are Driver, 3 Wood, and Hybrid.) These ideas began being inc operated into the clubs by the early 20's and utilized a half wood half metal configuration with a cavity in the middle that allowed more spring at the point of impact.

Modern day innovations.
By the late 80's people had began to start replacing tier old hickory shafted clubs and wood heads with graphite shafts and full metal heads, this allowed the ball to go farther and the swing to go faster leading to lower and lower scores. The lowest scores in the history of golf have been charted within the last 30 years.
