The Start of the Gold Rush
1.The 1850s saw the beginnings of the great Australian gold rush. Large gold deposits were discovered in various parts of Australia, particularly in the eastern States. -
Gold Produce
- A significant development at this time was the establishment of the Sydney Mint. This was the first Royal Mint to be established outside of England. Between 1851 and 1861, Australia produced one third of the world's gold.

Eureka Rebellion
- In 1854 gold miners rebel at Eureka in Victoria, in protest at the conditions imposed by the 'Miner's Licence'. The rebellion led to the abolition of the Miner's Licence. 3rd of December.

The Buckland Riot
The Buckland Riot was an anti-Chinese race riot that occurred on 4 July 1857, in the goldfields of the Buckland Valley, Victoria, Australia. At the time approximately 2000 Chinese and 700 European migrants were living in the Buckland area. -
The Welcome Stranger
- In the 1860s one memorable find during this decade was the Welcome Stranger nugget, by Richard Oates and John Deason in Moliagul, Victoria.

The Golden Eagle
Another large gold nugget found in Australia was the "Golden Eagle". It was discovered by sixteen-year-old Jim (or Jack) Larcombe on 8 January 1931 in Larkinville, Western australia. -
