Gibraltar had a very extensed evolution of the southern coast of the Iberian Peninsula, passing from Roman rule to the Vandal, later to the Visigoth, to be part of the Byzantine Empire, then return again to the Visigothic hands, finally passing in 711 to Muslim hands, together with the rest of the Visigoth kingdom. -

After the collapse of the Almohad Empire, Gibraltar was taken by the emir of Murcia in 1231. -

British invasion of Gibraltar
On July 13, 1713, the British invasion of Gibraltar was formalized by the Treaty of Utrecht between Spain and Great Britain which consist of the full and entire property of the city and castles of Gibraltar. -
Return to the Spanish crown
Gibraltar was subject to its return to the Spanish crown in case the British crown decided to get rid of it. The conditions of the treaty were not fully respected by the British, who ignored Spanish legality. -
War end
The war ended with the Treaty of Seville on 1729 which confirmed British possession of the city. Great Britain and Spain then agreed that Gibraltar would be constituted as a neutral zone where there would be no presence of either of the two countries. -
Spain constructions
Spain ordered the construction of a line of fortifications behind of the neutral zone.
