The Republic of Ghana
On This day, Ghana officially became a republic. Thus changing it's name to The Republic of Ghana. -
The President of Ghana is Overthrown!
Ghana's first president, Kwame Nkrumah, was overthrown. Once he was overthrown, the military took over. The military abolished the civilian government and the constitution. -
The Flag of Ghana is Adopted
The official flag of Ghana was only accepted by the Ghanaians by 1966. The red symbolizes the sacrifices for Ghana's independence, the yellow symbolizes the gold that is found in Ghana, and green symbolizes the landscape of Ghana. The black star in the center symbolizes their independence. Fun Fact: Ghana's soccer team is called the Black Stars. This was named because of the black star in the middle of the flag. (The Black Stars are the best soccer team in all of Africa) -
A New President?
Another military takedown is inbound. Accept this one is lead by Lt. Col. Ignatius Kutu Acheampong, who, unlike other military rulers who came to power, had no plan what-so-ever to return back to civilian rule. -
The Arrested are Released
About 23 of the some 2,000 who were in the group of people that brought the NRC (National Redemption Council) to power were released. -

Tribes Fight
Throughout the 1990's Ghana was home to may different tribes. The Kankomba (a landless tribe) fought for economic rights against the dominant Nanumba Tribe. -

Rawlings the New President
Jerry Rawlings won the next election for the term of 1992-1996. This is a big deal because he was the first president to serve a full term without being overthrown. -
And the 1996 Election Winner is...
Rawlings won the 1996 election. Making him president of Ghana for another term. He had 58% of the vote, but a new competitor raised having about 40% of the vote. His name is John Kufor, he did end up becoming president later on in the course of history. -
Tension between Rawlings and Kufor
During Rawling's anniversary speech of his 1979 takeover, he heavily implied that Kufor didn't have confidence in the military. This caused many acts of public rallies. This caused Kufor to abolish the holiday commemorating the 1979 takeover. -
Gas Pipeline Treaty
Ghana, Togo, Benin, and Nigeria all signed a treaty that established the legal and physical framework for $500 million dollars! -
Mining Sector
The US invested in the new mining sector for Ghana. This project would take 1 billion dollars! -
The Flood
There was a massive flood that destroyed most of Ghana. About 400,000 people were affected. There ware about 20 reported deaths
