Germany - Hitler and the rise of the Nazi Party 1919-33

  • Hitler was born

  • The German Workers' Party (DAP) founded

    Founded by Anton Drexler in Munich.
  • Hitler attended his first DAP meeting

    As part of an army assignment he attended the meeting to investigate the party. Only 23 people attended.
  • Hitler became a member of the DAP

  • The NSDAP bought the Volkischer Beobachter

    Bought for 180,000 marks.
  • The 25-Point Programme of the DAP revealed

    This programme included: the scrapping of the Treaty of Versailles, expanding Germany's borders for lebensraum and depriving Jews of German citizenship.
  • Nazi Party membership = 1100

  • The DAP became the NSDAP (the National Socialist German Workers's Party)

    Hitler also introduced the swastika as the party's emblem and members began to use the raised arm salute.
  • The Sturmabteilung created

    Also know as the SA, brownshirts and storm troopers. The SA were the private army of the NSDAP; they were recruited from ex-soldiers demobilised from the army, the unemployed and students. Many came from the Freikorps.
  • Hitler became leader of the NSDAP

  • The Stosstrupp created

    Trusted members of the SA were selected to form Hitler's own bodyguard known as the Shock Troop.
  • The Munich Putsch

  • Nazi Party re-launched

    At the Burgerbrau Keller - the scene of the Munich Putsch. 4000 people came, a further 1000 had to be turned away.
  • The Schutzstaffel created

    The Protection Squad or SS were a new party security group.
  • Nazi Party membership = 100,000

  • The German general election

    Nazi Party seats = 12
    Votes = 810,000
  • Black Thursday

  • The Wall Street Crash

  • SA membership = 400,000

  • Heinrich Brüning became chancellor

  • German general election

    Nazi seats = 107
    Nazi votes = 6 million
  • Black SS uniforms introduced

  • German presidential election

    Hindenburg = 18 million
    Hitler = 11 million
    Thällmann = 5 million
  • German presidential election

    Hindenburg = 19 million
    Hitler = 13 million
    Thällmann = 4 million
  • Chancellor Heinrich Brüning banned the SA and SS

    This angered right wing parties so much that Kurt von Schleicher organised a coalition of right wing groups who claimed a majority in the Reichstag.
  • Brüning resigned

  • Franz von Papen became chancellor

    Von Schleicher controlled the new government from behind the scenes.
