Danish War The Danish War was a war was a conflict over two states, Schleswig and Holstein. The Danes wanted to annex schleswig, but so did the Prussians. This led to a war between the Danes and the two most powerful German states, Prussia and Austria. The latter easily defeated the Danes and split Holstein and Schleswig between each other. -

Austro-Prussian War Also known as the Seven Weeks War, Bismarck led Prussia to victory in a short lived war against Austria over the control of Schleswig-Holstein. The war ended in seven weeks with the remarkable victory in favor of Prussia. -

North German Confederation The North German Confederation was the union of countries formed as a result of the Danish War. Although the country was formed by delegates of all states, the numbers greatly favored Prussia which led to William I and Bismarck to remain in power. -

Ems Telegram The Ems telegram was originally a report of an ecounter between a French ambasador and William I that was sent to Bismarck. Bismarck edited the telegram and sent it to be published in the newspaper the following day which enraged the French. -

Franco-Prussian War Using the Ems Telegram to his advantage, Bismarck offended the French to where they declared war on the Prussians. This convinced the southern German states to join with the north because they were under the ruse that the French were the aggressors. After a Prussian victory, the last of the German states (excluding Austria) joined Germany. -
