Spain's purpose in North America was the 3 g's.
God: Spain didn't have much success creating missions so that natives could be converted into Catholics.
Glory; Spained hoped starting missions and claiming land would make them a stronger power in the world.
Gold: The missionsand explorers like Hernando de Soto helped bring gold to Spain -

Hernando de Soto
Hernando de Soto was an explorer from Spain.
He explorerd what is the Southestern US and Georgia.
He set out a mission for the 3 g's.
Most indians treated him as god and he killed the ones that didn't.
De Soto died in 1541 on his voyage, but his men covered it up and kept going. -

France
France's main interest was the fur trade.
Many protestants from from France came to Georgia and South Carolina.
France was never able to establosh a permanent colony in Georgia. -

Spanish Missions
After de Soto's death in 1541, both Spain and France started to explore what is now Georgia.
Spain successfully established missions from 1568 to 1684.
The missions did not last because of disease, attacks by other tribes supported by the Britsh, and pirate attacks detroyed all of the Spais missions. -
Colony of Georgia
The Charter of 1732 states the purpse of the colony was for three reasons: Charity, Economy, and Defense.
Charity: Georgia was a colony for "worthy poor". This meant that since England gave these poor citizens land, they could not drink or own slaves.
Economy; Beacause of England merchantilism, colonists were forced to plant crops like tobacco and mulberry trees for silk worms to feed on.
Defense: Georgia was very successful at repelling Spanish attacks from Florida. -
Malcontents
Colonists that paid their own into Georgia and were unhappy with the laws banning slavery and the liquor placed by the Trustees and Oglethorpe.
Because of the Malcontents' complaints, the ban on slavery and liquor was lifted, forever changing Georgia history. -
"Worthy Poor"
Georgia was a colony for the "worthy poor."
This meant since England gave these poor citizens land in the colony, the could not drink or own slaves. + -
James Oglethorpe and the Trustees
England gave James Oglethorpe and 20 other trustees permission to establish Georgia as a colony in 1733.
He befriended Native Americans like Tomochichi and Mary Musgrove.
He also allowed Jews, Scttish, and German immigranto settle in Georgia.
Oglethorpe helped establish Savannah and defended Georgia from three Spanish attacks.
Oglethorpe left in 1743 never to return. -
England
England set up many successful colonies in North America.
Georgia was England's last of its 13 colonies created in 1733.
The goal of England was merchantilism.
England was able to control colonies like Georgia, all over the world. -
Mary Musgrove
The daughter of a Yamacraw woman and an English fur trader.
Musgrove became fluent in both languages and helped translate for Oglethorpe and Tomochichi -
Tomochichi
He united the Yamasee and creek tribes in 1728 to form the Yamacraw.
He believed his tribe could gain much from an alliance with the British.
He became a clse friend and ally to James Oglethorpe. -
Salzburgers
German protestants that came to Georgia to escape prosecution.
They were the firsd to build an orphanage, were openly against slavery, built the first Sunday school, and were the only group to have successful silk farms. -
City of Savannah
Founded by James Oglethorpe.
Was named after the Savannah River. -
Highland Scots
They were a fierce group of Scottish warriors brought to Georgia by oglethorpe for their fighting abilities.
They successfully defended Georgia in battles like the Battle of the Bloody Marsh and the Battle for Jenkins' Ear.
They were also antislavery. -
John Reynolds
Georgia's first governor.
Ushered in the court systems and public assembly.
He wasn't a good leader and was quickly recalled. -
Henry Ellis
He was a very successful governor.
He divided Georgia into 8 counties.
He also made a deal with Spain to move Georgia's territoty to the St.Mary's River.
Ellis hated the Georgia heat, and he walked the streets on Savannah with a thermometer around his neck. -
James Wright
Very successful governor that expanded Georgia's territory even further.
Was loyal to England. -
Mississipian Indians
They lived in large mound towns and were responsible for spreading advanced mounds throughout the Southest and Georgia.
They lived in tribes called chiefdoms were one ruler had almost all the power
They were the first natives to meet the Europeans.
Shortly after this most of them died from battle and starvation.
