First Indochina War

Bao Dai Returns and US Aid

US Military Advisors

French Surrender
After the loss at Dien Bien Phu the French surrender to the Viet Minh and peace talks begin at Geneva. Picture Link -
Two Vietnams
After the Geneva Accords Vietnam split into two countries at the seventeenth parallel. The north was lead by the Viet Minh backed Ho Chi Minh while the south was lead by the US backed Ngo Dinh Dien. Picture Link -
Results of the Deaths
A year after two US military advisors died in Vietnam the US more than double the amount of advisors in Vietnam as a result. Picture Link -
Viet Cong
The Viet Cong (VC) and the National Liberation Front (NLF) form to oppose the government of South Vietnam and are backed by previous Viet Minh. Picture Link -
MAAG becomes MACV
the Uniteds states MAAG advisors became Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (MACV) after increased hostility of VC and NFL insurgents. This allowed the advisors to fire back if fired upon. Picture Link -
Diem Overthrown
With US backing General Duong Van Minh overthrows and executes Diem to assume control of South Vietnam. Picture Link -
Gulf of Tonkin Resolution
The USS Maddox positioned in the Gulf of Tonkin was attacked a few times which lead to this resolution which allowed for the US to make whatever moves to stomp out VC activities in order to keep South Vietnam safe. Picture Link -
Operation Rolling Thunder
In response to more attacks on US troops and property the United States begins Operation Rolling Thunder in order to destroy North Vietnamese trasnportation and industry. Picture Link -
US Combat Troops Land
The first United States combat troops arrive in Vietnam signaling a rise in commitment to the conflict. By the end of the year the fighting would significantly increase and the troop count would soar to 200,000. Picture Link -
Troop Levels Climb and Climb
The involvement in Vietnam reached a new level when the troops stationed in Vietnam was recored at 389,000 by the end of 1966. Picture Link -
FIghting Intensifies Further and Ho Chi Minh Dies
In the midst of the continuing intesity of the war for Vietnam the North Vietnam leader dies at the age of 79 six years prior to the reunification of Vietnam. Picture Link -
Vietnam War Ends
The longest war in US history ends with more than three million serving in it. The death toll nearly reached sixty thousand and the injured counted atleast a hundred and fifty thousand. Not to mention a thousand troops that were unaccounted for. Picture Link
