Harvey Milk's Legacy Harvey Milk becomes first openly gay elected official in San Francisco. He fought for gay rights but was sadly assassinated a year later. He fought against Propisition 6, which prohibited gays from being school teachers. -
DOMA
DOMA, or the Defense of Marriage Act, was put in place by President Bill Clinton. It defined marriage as between a man and a woman for federal purposes out of fear that same-sex marriage would be legalized in individual states. -
