    The gay club, Stonewall, was closed and the employees were arrested due to serving alcohol without a license to do so.
    Gay people felt the police purposely targeted gay clubs due to the police shutting so many gay clubs down. This leading to the crowded audience began throwing bottles.

    -President Clinton’s effort to end discrimination in the military and allow homosexuals to serve their country without harassment
    -Wanted to end the ban of homosexuals serving in the military
    -Homosexuals could serve in the military as long as they didn’t disclose that they were homosexual - kept a secret
    -They don’t tell, the military won’t ask
    -Obama ended this policy in 2011 because society’s values had changed and it was no longer acceptable to force homosexuals into secrecy

    Supporters of traditional marriage around the United States grew concerned that same sex marriages may become legal and therefore introduced the Defense of Marriage Act.
    September 21st, 1996, President Bill Clinton signed the act into law.

    John Lawrence was found engaged in a sexual act with another male.
    Police arrested both men.
    Lawrence appealed his arrest.
    The ruling of Lawrence v. Texas stated that consensual and private homosexual sex is part of a substantive right to liberty as protected by the constitution.
  • US v Windsor 2013

    US v Windsor 2013
    Two years after the state of New York recognized the same sex marriage of Edith Windsor and Thea Spyer, Spyer died in 2009 leaving all of her estate to Windsor. When Windsor tried to claim the federal tax exemption for surviving spouses, she was unable to do so and punished because of DOMA, which denies federal recognition to same-sex spouses.
    The United States District Court and the Court of repeals ruled in Windsor's favor.
