they both served in the army as officers but never saw actual combat. It was where they both saw there "golden girl." Daisy and wouldn't marry gatsby because he was poor at the time and zelda wouldn't marry Fitzgerald because he was also poor at that time. Later on gatstby and Fitzgerald obtained wealth to sway the minds of their golden girls. Both Fitzgerald and Jay Gatsby had trouble obtaing wealth as they grew up. Gatsby obtained it out of sheer luck. when he obtained this wealth he marked his own destruction. "Why they came East I don't know. They had spent a year in France for no particular reason, and then drifted here and there unrestfully wherever people played polo and were rich together."
