He began this study while attending the University of Pisa. He watched a suspended lamp swing back and forth in the cathedral of Pisa.The most notable discovery about the pendulum was the period (the time in which a pendulum swings back and forth) does not depend on the arc of the swing (the isochronism) -

Pope Urban VIII gave Galileo permission to resume discussing the Copernican system. So, he wrote this book to defend the truthfulness of Copernicansim. However, he was ordered beforehand to not teach the Copernican theory. Put to trial as a result -
Went to trial for his beliefs
Believed in the Copernican system, which was prohibited because it disapproved of the interpretation of the Bible. He was sentenced to nine years under house arrest. -
