Convening the Estates General
There were three different Estates. It was brought to an end when members of the Third Estate left and formed the National Assembly. -
Tennis Court Oath
When the Third Estate was locked out of the meeting room they met at an indoor tennis court and pledged not to leave until a new constitution was written up. -
Storming of the Bastille
People stormed the Bastille and killed some guards and paraded around the streets with their heads on pikes. -
Great Fear
People broke into nobles' houses and burned all the legal papers that bound them to pay feudal dues or even burned down the homes. -
Declaration of the Rights of Man
This decloration said, "men are born and remain free in rights." It also guaranteed freedom of speech, equal justice, and freedom of religion -
Women’s march to Versailles
Women had rioted over the price of bread and marched to Versailles and demanded that Louis and Marie return to Paris. Louis and Marie never saw Versailles again. -
Louis and Marie’s flight to Varennes
Louis and Marie tried to escape France, but were caught and turned into the authorities. -
Constitution of 1791
The king approved a new constitution where France’s government became a limited constitutional Monarchy, where King’s held very little power. It also created the Legislative Assembly which had the power to create laws. -
Brunswick Manifesto
This threatened people that if the royal family was harmed, the other French civilians would be harmed. -
Reign of Terror
The Reign of Terror was when Robespierre ruled France for a year. -
National Convention
This quickly abolished the monarchy and declared France a Republic where every male citizen could vote, no women though. -
Directory
A directory was where a two house legislature and an Executive body of five men who ran the country. -
Napoleon Bonaparte takes over
He was a general that led the armies. He also defended the National Convention. -
Concordat of 1801
Napoleon signed this with Pope Pius VII. It was an agreement where each agreed to deal with their own issues and not get involved with the other -
Louisiana Purchase
Napoleon sells Louisiana to Thomas Jefferson for 15 million dollars. -
Napoleon becomes Emperor
The people favored the vote and let Napoleon become Emperor. To show he was more powerful than the Church, he crowned himself rather than letting the Pope do it. -
Napoleonic Code
This was a code Napoleon made which favored order over individual freedoms. -
Battle of Trafalgar
This was the battle Napoleon lost to the British. -
Continental System
This was what Napoleon set up. It was a blockade to prevent Britain from trading with Europe. -
Peninsular War
This was when Britain, Russia, Prussia, Sweden, and Austria declared war on France. -
Invasion of Russia
The Invasion of Russia was Napoleons biggest mistake. He started with an army of 420,000 and only 10,000 made it back. -
Exile to Elba
The Russian and Prussian soldiers exiled Napoleon to Elba which was off the coast of Italy. -
Battle of Waterloo
Britain and Prussia defeated the French in this Battle. -
Exile to St. Helena
After Napoleon lost the battle, he was sent to St. Helena where he died six years later.
