Future of Mobile Devices

  • Lithium-ion batteries

Slimmer smaller, higher capacity batteries will continue to develop overtime using more advanced lithium-ion technology.
  • Period: to

    Facial Recognition

Advancing from pass-codes and then fingerprint recognition. Mobile devices will move to the more secure facial recognition for security purposes. using multiple combined technologies such as infrared, high resolution cameras and dot projectors, phones are now able to accurately identify a user.
  • Period: to

    AR - Augmented Reality

AR is a relatively new feature however it is one that will change the way that we interact with our mobile devices. In a nutshell AR allows the user to see objects in their surrounding environment which are not really there such as placing a bookcase in their room to see how it would look and of course if the item would fit. This is done through the phones screen and camera and relating back to the university could allow users to discover more about an object just be using their camera
  • Period: to

    Virtual Assistants

Virtual assistants include Amazon's Alexa, Apple's Siri and Google's Voice, they allow the user to interact vocally with their device. As mobile device operating systems become more streamlined and intuitive the use of virtual assistants will only increase, becoming more integrated and providing the user with another level of interaction from their mobile device.
  • Built-In Projector

With phone screens constantly increasing in quality, developers are now looking for ways to introduce additional display technologies, one of which that is proving popular is the introduction of a mini projector within the device. This would allow the user to projector the image / video to a surface and would bring the benefit of allowing multiple people to view this easily. In the university this could be used during events to provide additional information without the need of large projectors.
  • Wireless Charging

Induction Loop technology placed inside surfaces on cars and furniture provide charging when the device is placed down touching them.
  • Virtual Buttons

With screens increasing in size along with phones getting thinner and lighter, buttons are becoming space wasting hardware which could end up being replaced with virtual ones. With the use of Haptics (a small vibration the phone sends out when a position of the screen is tapped) giving the feel of a physical button they will soon become obsolete. Virtual buttons give numerous advantages the biggest being enhanced durability from not having physical moving components
  • Period: to

    5G

At 10 times faster than 4G, 5G will allow even more opportunities for companies and developers to provide further more advanced applications and experiences for users. These may include but are not limited to:
    - Fluid 4K streaming
    - Advanced applications requiring higher bandwidth
    - Enable and advance the use of connected cars and smart cities
  • Beam Charging

The charging of a mobile phone without the need to place it upon an induction loop. the power can simply be transmitted through the air
