    The Third Estate proclaimed themselves as the National Assembly to draft a new constitution. They started meeting in a tennis court. This was important because this is what started the revolution.
  • Storming of the Bastille in Paris

    Storming of the Bastille in Paris
    Rebels got into a prison and got weapons. This was a turning point in the revolution because people got weapons for fighting and this inspired revolts in all France.

    The National Assembly voted to abolish all legal privileges of nobles and clergy. This was important because now nobles should pay taxes and have the same rights as the Third Estate.

    Women marched with weapons or items they had. They took the king as a virtual prisoner. This was important because after this, King Louis was forced to accept the decrees made by the National Assembly.

    Radicals were angry, they declared themselves as commune and attacked the royal palace. They took the king captive, this was also a turning point in the revolution because then the commune had the control of the government and later on they will make radical changes.

    The National Convention begin meeting, they abolished monarchy, and established a republic. This was important because they changed the type of government in France.

    King Louis was executed by the Radicals in 1793. This was an important achievement for the Radicals because they hated him and wanted to guillotined him.

    Led by Robespierre, took control of the government and caused the Reign of Terror. They mainly killed people that were part of the aristocracy. This was important because they drastically killed many french. This will later inspire actions by the National Convention.

    Robespierre was executed by the National Assembly without a trial. He did not have a trial. The reason they executed him is that the delegates of the National Assembly started to fear that they were going to be executed by Robespierre. It was an important event because this ended the Reign of Terror.

    They made a new government. It set up two legislative powers: A lower house, and an upper house. The upper house elected the Executive power. The executive power was held by the Directory who were very corrupt. They relied in the military. This was very important because it changed the type of government in France, but also weakened France's government.

    Made by Napoleon, he overthrew the Directory. This was an important event because he established a new type of government and he held absolute power.

    France was at war with a coalition of Russia, Great Britain and Austria. This affected France because they were making many changes in the government, and were weak.This was important later for the empire Napoleon built.

    He made an agreement with the pope and established Catholic as majority in France. He kept the Church lands. This was important because he made everybody happy and kept France stable.

    War breaks out again. Between 1805 and 1807, he defeated Austria, Prussia, and Russian armies. This victories were important for the empire he built.

    Napoleon crowned himself as an emperor for life. This is important because this will help France conquer lands and make laws related to but also against Enlightenment ideas.

    He adopted many of the French Revolution's ideas, but he did not respect women's and children's rights, it was a step back for them. This was very important for the legal system of France.

    He made a bureaucracy based on talent. Officials were promoted based on ability not on rank or birth. This was important because he was promoting one of the ideas of the French Revolution.

    Russians ignored the Continental System. France decided to invade Russia, but Russia decided to burn villages so France did not have supplies. When France reach Moscow they find it ablaze, so Napoleon called the Great Retreat. This was important because it really weakened Napoleon's army.

    European states attacked France. Napoleon was exiled to Elba and monarchy was restored. This was important because this was a step back for the French Revolution.

    Great Britain, Austria, Prussia, and Russia met to arrange a final peace settlement. They restored the Bourbon king to the French throne.They balanced political and military forces. This was a victory for conservatism. They also adopted the principle of intervention. This was important for all the world because they stopped the chaos that was happening in Europe, but they were not following Enlightenment ideas.

    Napoleon came back to France and wins over the troops that were sent to capture him. Then, he had control of France again. This was a short period (around 100 days) in which Napoleon returned and tried to rebuild his empire. This was important for France to try to rebuilt its golden age and to stop monarchy.

    In Waterloo, Napoleon met British and Russian armies lead by the Duke of Wellington. He lost again and this time time, he was sent to Saint Helena to make sure he did not return again. This was important because of this the old monarchy in France was restored in France.
