French Revolution Timeline

  • Meeting the Estates General

    The KIng called this meeting to fix France's financial problems. This meeting backfired on the king and showed the third estate that they had power so they wanted more and revolted.
  • Storming of the Bastille

    The east side of Paris, France was attacked by an angry mob of the French people.This signaled the start of the French Revolution.
  • Declaration of Rights of Man and Citizen is Published

    The Declaration of the rights of man was France's constitution. This defined individual and collective rights of everyone at the time of the constitution.
  • Women's March on Versailles

    An angry mob of nearly 7,000 working women were armed with pitchforks, pikes and muskets, marched in the rain from Paris to Versailles. To the beat of a drum the women chanted "bread".
  • France Declares war on Austria

    Revolutionaries wanted war because they thought war would unify the country, and had a genuine desire to spread the ideas of the Revolution to all of Europe.
  • The Execution of King Louis

    King Louis tried to flee from France but was caught and brought back. He was tried an convicted of treason for running and was sentenced to death by guillotine.
  • Execution of Marie Antoinette

    Nine months after he husband, King Louis, was executed Marie was executed by guillotine also. Like her husband she was also tried and convicted of treason.
  • Reign of Terror

    The reign of terror was a time that the Committee of Public Safety started executing their enemies without trial. Over 16,000 people were executed and over 10,000 people died in prison.
  • Execution of Robespierre

    Robespierre was the person who made the Reign of Terror. He was the cause of over 17,000 deaths of people who were against the revolution. He was overthrown and arrested. the next day him and 21 followers of him were executed by public guillotine.
  • Napoleon's Coup D'etat

    The Coup of 18 Brumaire brought General Napoleon Bonaparte to power as First Consul of France. This bloodless coup d'état overthrew the Directory, replacing it with the French Consulate.
